We’re absolutely buzzing to share some incredible news — Jack’s Alt-Stays has officially achieved the Green Tourism Gold Award! 🥇
This award assures our guests that our business has been independently assessed against rigorous sustainability standards recognised across the tourism industry. It’s our ‘badge of honour’, and we couldn’t be more proud.

.
What Is a Green Tourism Accreditation?
Green Tourism is the world’s largest and most respected sustainable tourism certification programme, helping businesses like ours operate responsibly while caring for People, Places, and the Planet 🌍
Their independent assessors, trained to IEMA standards, evaluate everything from energy use and waste management to community involvement, biodiversity, and guest experience.
Only those who meet the very highest standards across these 15 sustainability goals earn a coveted Gold Award – and we’re rather chuffed to be among them!
.
What the Gold Tier Means to Us
At Jack’s Alt-Stays, sustainability has been part of our story since day one 🌱
We built our cabins with the goal of offering one-of-a-kind accommodation experiences that don’t cost the earth (literally) 🌍
Only 1% of new accreditations come in at gold.
🏆 Achieving Gold means:
-
- We’re operating at the highest standards of sustainability across all areas of our business.
-
- Our environmental ethos runs through every detail – from our sustainably built cabins, to the experiences we promote around the island.
-
- We’re continuously improving and looking for new ways to do better; because sustainability is a journey, not a destination.
For our guests, it means you can enjoy your unique island escape with peace of mind, knowing your stay supports a business that genuinely cares – about the planet, the local community, and your experience 🏝️

Our Green Credentials: How We Earned Gold 🥇
So, what exactly makes Jack’s Alt-Stays a Gold-level sustainable stay?
Here are just some of the efforts that helped us achieve our Green Tourism Gold:
🌞 Renewable Energy & Efficiency
All of our cabins are powered by 100% renewable electricity. They’re designed with market-leading insulation, LED lighting, and energy-efficient appliances to minimise our reliance on the grid, all year-round.
🌿 Eco-Friendly Design
Each cabin was built locally with sustainably sourced materials, and our landscaping encourages biodiversity – think wildflowers, pollinator-friendly plants, and native species.
🗑️ Waste Reduction
We’ve eliminated single-use non-recyclable plastics, use refillable toiletries, and use eco-certified cleaning products.
🪵 Local & Low-Impact Experiences
We champion local – from the Scottish suppliers we source from, to promoting nearby cafes, restaurants, and outdoor activities that support Millport’s small business community.
.
♻️ Recycling & Circular Practices
We have super-easy guest recycling facilities and composting on-site, and even our wood-fired hot tubs use sustainably sourced, low-carbon Woodlets briquettes made in Ayrshire.
🐝 Biodiversity Boosting
We’ve turned our site into a mini haven for nature, with areas left to rewild, bird boxes, and pollinator-friendly planting around each cabin.
💚 Community & Communication
We support local community initiatives and regularly share our eco efforts through our blogs and socials.
.
Looking Ahead
This Gold Award marks a huge milestone, but we’re not stopping here. Sustainability is an ever-evolving journey, and we’ll continue working to push boundaries, reduce our carbon footprint, and inspire greener travel; especially as we grow from 5 to 8 cabins.
Thanks to Green Tourism for recognising our efforts; and to our top class team and guests for helping us reach this goal. Together, we’re proving that premium, comfort, and sustainability can go hand-in-hand. 🌍
Cheers! – The Jacks 💚
